A Lover of Dogs.

Dear Sir, —I fully believe that every person has a right to lodge a complaint, if it is justified. But a complaint was placed before my landlord recently that I was keeping all kinds of dogs on the verandah of the house I occupied. Now. when trade was brisk and work plentiful, in my happy moments 1 have often seen three keyholes in my door and sometimes more. But for the benefit of the person or persons who complained I would like to say I have only one dog, which is a pup four months old. The reason I fastened him to the verandah was that I have some three-weeks-old chickens. One day he sampled one and seemed to enjoy it. I believe in feeding a dog. but not on chickens, so I was left with the alternative of having the pup destroyed or fastening him up Being human, as I like a dog. I fastened him to the verandah on twenty yards of chain until I locked the chickens up at night Then I let the dog loose. Of course, with the races being held, the person or persons who laid this complaint may have backed some winners, and being a little joyful when they passed my front gate they saw six or seven dogs where there was only one. Personally I have seen pink rats and white elephants and reptiles of all colours, but I alwavs kept what I saw in those moments to myself.—l am, etc., SUBURBANITE.
