Radio Programmes.

Dear Sir, —It is indeed amusing to ascertain the opinions of the supposedly authoritative critics on the merits or demerits of broadcast programmes. At present there seem to be two types of listeners—those

who appreciate the classics and loathe the lighter music, and those who hold directly opposite views. Naturally, both complain that the programmes contain too much of what they do not like and a scarcity of what appeals to their own tastes. Each critic would like his or her own choice given consideration to the confounding of anyone else who may have other views. The utter selfishness of the average critic is astounding.

To any intelligent listener, the Broadcasting Board is providing excellent fare. It is possible to obtain a complete evening of classical music and. if that is not acceptable. a complete evening of light music any night during the week. The latest gramophone record releases are broadcast as soon as they are available. The recorded fare is provided by the world.’s most famous artists and combinations of artists, and if listeners do not appreciate their efforts the fault lies with the gramophone companies, not with the Broadcasting Board. Local talent is used to the best advantage and local organisations are often given the opportunity to broadcast a complete evening’s entertainment. There is also an alternative service available if the fare provided by the YA stations does not suit the taste of any listener who may dislike whatever type of entertainment is being given at any time. To sum up. every type of listener is being catered for in some way. What more can be done? —I am, etc., LESS STATIC.
