The Hon T. O’Bvrne, M.L.C.. arrived from Wellington this morning. Messrs W. M. Sexton (Timaru> and J. M. Hastings (Wellington) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., president of the Assessment Court, arrived from the north this morning. “Messrs F. Kennedy (Blenheim), 11. A. Francis (Hokitika) and T. A. Ashworth (Pembroke) are staving at the New City Hotel. Guests at Warner’s Hotel include Messrs Alan Grant and Ernest Grant (Waimate), W. S. Dingle (Hamilton), and H. E. Morton (Wellington). Mr W. G. Cooper, chief postmaster at New Plymouth, has been transferred to the position of chief postmaster at Wanganui. Mr P. Hockley', Christchurch manager for Messrs Gordon and Gotch, Ltd., will leave Christchurch to-day on a visit to Melbourne. Mr Irving Sladen, who has been on a visit abroad, was welcomed back at a luncheon meeting of the Christchurch Business Men’s Club yesterday'. Mr W. A. Erasmuson is an inmate of the Lewisha mllospital, where he underwent an operation on Saturday morning. He is progressing satisfactorily. Mr A. J. M’Eldowney, general secretary’ of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Christchurch, who has been spending a holiday' in the North Island, returned to Christchurch to-day. Messrs H. A. LePine, W. S. Corbett, J. S. Duke,JD. H. Anderson, 11. G. Williams, M. C. Walker, J. F. Hogarth (Wellington) and H. Morpeth (Auckland) are guests at the United Service Hotel. A private dinner was given recently in London by' the chairman of the English Rugby Union (Major J. Milne, of Lancashire) in honour of Dr P. F. M’Evedy', president of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The Rev J. E. Lopdell, of Lower Ilutt, and Mrs Lopdell, passed through Christchurch this morning on their way to Dunedin to attend the General Assembly' of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Mr T. M. Stanton has been appointed structural engineering assistant to the Christchurch City’ Council. Mr Stanton was temporarily employed as assistant engineer on the Causeway road construction. Mr A. T. F. Stokes, a well-known Christchurch swimmer, and formerly New Zealand swimming champion, is at present a patient in the Christchurch Public Hospital suffering from appendicitis. He is progressing favourably. Mr J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Works Committee, who recently' returned from a six months’ holiday abroad, was welcomed by the DeputyMayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) on resuming his seat at last evening’s meeting of the City Council. Mr M. J. Miller, of Christchurch, is now a Vicar Choral of St Paul’s Cathedral (London). He has for some time been leader of the choir of St Columb’s, Notting Hill. Mr Miller is still studying at the Royal College of Music under Professor A. Garcia. Miss Merle Miller continues with the Sadler Wells-Old Vic Company. The Rev F. B. Redgrave, of Christchurch, with his wife and daughter, has motored over the greater part of England and has also toured part of Scotland and Wales. They spent a month in Devon where Mr Redgrave was in charge of the parish of Holbeton, whose vicar, the Rev L. H. Fenn, was at one time in New Zealand. For three months before their return to New Zealand by the Ormonde, leaving London on December 8, Mr Redgrave is employed in deputation work for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Southern Ireland and parts of England.
