AMATEURS IN ACTION.
Successful Tournament at Ashburton. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, July 19. A successful amateur boxing tournament was held by the Ashburton Boxing Association in the Ashburton Rifle Club’s rooms to-night, when several contests were staged between Ashburton and Christchurch boxers. There was a large attendance. Messrs A. N. Grigg and H. R. C. M’Elrea were judges, and Mr H. D. Johnston was referee. At the conclusion of the tournament, the patron, Mr J. Grigg, presented the prizes won at the last Ashburton tournament. Results:— Right heavy-weight—W. Rister (Ashburton) 12st 71b beat P. Tavlor( Christchurch) list 61b; J. Ward (Ashburton) 12st beat’ J. King (Mount Somers) l2st Welter-weight—M. Vessey (Ashburton) lost lib beat H. Knox (Christchurch) lOst 51b; R. Sommerville (Ashburton) lOst 31b beat J. Hunter (Christchurch) lOst; J. Con nell (Ashburton) lOst 71b beat R. Kersley (Rakaia) lOst olb. This bout ended in the second round as a result of Connell sustaining a broken jaw. Middle-weight—T.
