Venetian Prisoners Adopt Dartmoor Tactics. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Julv 19, 12.55 p.m.) Venice. July is. Memories of Dartmoor were recalled by a mutiny at Judecca Prison. Twenty convicts, alleging rough treatment and severe discipline, chose the occasion of the visit of the Minister of Justice to set fire to the prison.
They ingeniously drilled a hole in the second storey floor, through which they dropped lighted horsehair into the carpenter’s shop, which was filled with shavings The main prison was completely gutted. There was intense panic amongst the 370 other inmates, but the warders and troeps safely transferred them unharmed to a neighbouring gaol.
