Need for Establishment of Air Ports. “The city of to-morrow without an airport will be handicapped, just as a city of to-day is without railway and shipping facilities,” said Mr V. R. J. Hean, assistant architect to the Christchurch City Council, last evening, when he addressed members of the Christchurch branch of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand upon the subject of airports. Mr Hean’s address dealt mainly with the requirements of a modern airport, and was illustrated by a number of lantern slides of airports in England, the United States and on the Continent. “The modern airport, like the railway station, will become the gateway to the city it serves,” said Mr Hean. ** More and more as air services expand the airport will become a very necessary factor in the whole development of the community.

Mr Hean said the first problem confronting civic authorities was the selection of a site, or the reservation of one for flying purposes. It was impossible to overstress the importance of allocating a suitable place for an airport at the earliest oportunity in the planning of any municipality or township. “In existing cities it should not be difficult to acquire a satisfactory site bv a careful study of the conditions and w'ith a proper foresight of future activities.” said Mr Hean, who dealt in detail with all the facters involved
