Gatherings Held in Town

and Country. BRIDGE AND 500 PARTY. The Opawa Croquet Club held its fortnightly bridge and 500 afternoon at the Bowling Pavilion on Thursday afternoon last. There was a good attendance of members and ladies from the Sumner, Linwood and the United Clubs. The prize-winners were Mrs Maddren (bridge) and Mrs Allen (500). Those present were: Mesdames Robson, Maddren. Faulkner, Owen, Cowl in, Holland, Cragg. Kane, Mapplebeck, Burgess. Lee. Garton, Coleman, Brown, Tustin, Day, Aughton, Allen, Bull, Reay, Bonar and Yates; Miss Bain and Mr Rawnsley. Gift Evening. On Saturday night Mrs F. Harris and Miss J. Sturrock were hostesses at an enjoyable gift evening given at the home of Mr and Mrs F. Harris, Hawksbury' Avenue, for Miss Molly Peters and Mr W. Kingston, who are to be married shortly*. The winners of competitions were Misses M. Peters, I. Campbell and J. Sturrock. Messrs W. and L. Kingston. Those present were: Mr and Mrs F. Harris, Mr and Mrs Coward, Mr and Mrs L. Kingston, Mr and Mrs Edwards, Mr and Mrs Les Kingston, Mr and Mrs H. Erickson; Misses M. Peters, D. Kars, I. Campbell, J. Sturrock and E. Stalker; Messrs W. Kingston, A. Woodham, L. Kars and R. Kingston. Xfibrary Subscribers’ Dance. Subscribers and friends of the Sydenham Public Library held a successful dance on Thursday evening in the Sydenham Football Club Hall, Lawson Street. Over 300 guests were present. Councillor T. H. Butterfield, representing the City' Council, attended and complimented the library' on having 1000 subscribers. He was introduced by Mr T. Kirton, president of the Library Committee, who also thanked the donors of prizes for the competitions held during the evening. The winners of the competitions were; Misses Watts, Sutcliffe and Cribb, Messrs Jackson, Langley. jun., and Hewitson. Bryson’s Band supplied the music. Mr G. C. Russell played the accompaniments for the following who gave items: Messrs W. Tooniey, D. M’Gill, J. Lockhart, Cole and C. Thomson. An exhibition dance was also given by Miss G. Fitzsimmons and Mr J. I’Anson. Mr R. Harris was M.C. Dance at Prebbleton. Members of the Hornby League Football Club entertained members of the visiting West Coast teams at a dance held in the Prebbheton Town Hall on Saturday evening. There was a iarge attendance. Kinsman’s Band supplied the music. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss B. Hartnell and partner and Miss Croat and partner. The card room was also well patronised, tire successful players being Mrs L. Gallagher. Mrs J. M’Clintock. Mr C. O’Malley and Mr P. Simpson. Messrs C. and J. Stuart were M.C.’s.

A successful social evening was held in the Cashmere Masonic Hall on Saturday under the auspices of the Cashmere Tlllls Bowling Club. There was an attendance of about 200. Mr E. D. Mosley, the club’s president, was in the chair. The following contributed to an excellent concert programme arranged by Airs S. H. Maddren; Airs Smith, Aliases B. Pollard. Emmett, Aletson, V. Yager, E. Parsons, Jean Edginton, Lucas, AI. Pollard and J. Aladdren, Messrs Al’Caffney, Sayers, Foster, Charters and Rawlinson. An exhibition dance was given by Alisa Evelyn Edgar and Mr W. Wallis. At the conclusion of the concert Mr Alosley presented a case of cutlery to Mr P. E. CMeby in recognition of Lis services to t/ie club. After supper was served dancing was enjoyed to music provided by Adcock's Orchestra. The success of the evening was due to the Ladies' Committee: Mesdames Mosley, Young, Aladdren, Dobbs, Anderson. Jacobsen, Bruce, Laver, Rutherford and Christie. Dance at Richmond School. The dance held by the School Committee in the Richmond School on Saturday evening was largely attended. Messrs Rowe and Alacbrayne were M.C.’s and Bryson’s Orchestra provided the music. Those present included: Alesdames J.' J. Rowe. W. FI. Simpson', W. Alacbrayne, W. Prangnell. W. Alardon. J. Liston, Raymond, Henderson, Alacbrayne, Noble, Ingham, Fraser, Mills and Cox. Party at Dunsandel. A surprise party, organised by ATrs F. Langhein, Riccarton, and Mrs J. A. Crawford, Yaldliurst. visited the home of Air and Airs W. Glen, Dunsandel, on Saturday evening. Games, competitions and dancing were enjoyed. Musical items were given by N. Hill, A. Riches and B. Webb, and songs were sung by Messrs P. Holmes and J. A. Crawford. Competitions were won by Mesdames R. J. Riches, W. Glen and ' Air J. A. Crawford. A lucky spot waltz was won by Aliss I. Crawford and Mr P. : Holmes.
