Railway Accidents.
Dear Sir. —I wish to congratulate you on 3'cur leading article in Saturday night's " Star ” in regard to inquiries into railway accidents not being open to the newspapers. Had an accident similar to the one at Sockburn- occurred in England it would have been inquired into by a specially qualified and disinterested officer of the Board of Trade, and all the evidence published. In the present case officers of the departns~fi£ hold the inquiry in camera, which is not in the interests of the staff concerned, as in case of any defects in the equipment the officers are practically sitting in judgment on themselves The Board of Trade have specially qualified officers for inquiries into all classes of accidents, such as colliery explosions, collisions and machinery accidents, and the evidence is published.— I am, etc., SUPERANNUATED.
