Mr B. E. H. Whitcombe and Mr Norton Francis were passengers by the Rangatira for Wellington last evening.

Mr W. IT. Woods, Mayor of Ashburton, passed through Christchurch yesterday on his way to Wellington. Mr Hubert Carter left last evening under engagement to the Wellington Musical Union for their performance of Verdi’s opera, “II Trovatore.” Mr D’Arcv Allen, of RKO-Radio Pictures, Wellington, is visiting Christchurch in connection with the coming season of “ Little Women.”

Messrs R. H. Cate, W. Machin, D. R. Menzies and F. J. Miller (Wellington) and S. Reid (Auckland) are among the guests at the United Service Hotel.

Messrs A. C. Ilesketh (Wellington), A. L. Thorpy (Greymouth), L. E. Sinclair (Alexandra), E. A. Astlev (Auckland) and A. Anderson (Timaru) are staying at the New City Hotel.

Mr Thomas Leech, of Rangiora. was elected an honorary life member of the Northern A. and P. Association, of which he is a past president, at the meeting of the general committee held at Rangiora yesterday. The Rev A. J. Petrie, vicar of Ashburton, has been appointed Archdeacon of A.karoa in place of Archdeacon F. N. Taylor, whose resignation was recently announced. It has been left to Archdeacon Taylor to decide when Mr Petrie shall take over the office. Mr E. J. Bell, librarian of the Canterbury Public Library, left last night for Wellington to attend a conference between the New Zealand Libraries’ Association and the New Zealand Booksellers’ Association. He expects to leave for Christchurch This evening.

Archbishop Averill, Primate of New Zealand; Bishop Cherrington, of Waikato, and Bishop Williams, of Waiapu, who have been attending the consecration of Archdeacon Fitchett as Bishop of Dunedin, returned to the nortfi by the Rangatira last evening. Bishop West-Watson, of Christchurch, also attended the consecration and returned last evening. Mr James Stevenson, of Flaxton, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., accompanied by Mrs Stevenson, will leave for Wellington to-morrow night to join the Monowai for Sydney, where he will join the Monterey, en route to England, via America. Mr Stevenson expects to be away from New Zealand for about six months.

The resignation of the Rev J. Craw ford M’Caw, minister at Akaroa for the past six years, was received at this morning’s meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery on account of his acceptance of the Te Puke charge. Bay o£ Islands. Mr M’Caw’s resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr W. H Rose, Moderator, extended to the retiring minister the best wishes of the Presbytery. Mr M’Caw expects to leave Akaroa about the middle of next month. The meeting also carried a motion of sympathy with Mr M’Caw on the death of his mother.
