NEWS FROM THE PORT.

Increase in Registrations* of Unemployed.

It was reported at last night’s meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council that the number of unemployed on the relief workers’ register was on the increase and unfortunately the council had no more new relief works in view.

The Town Clerk stated that at present there were about eighty-one single relief workers in Lyttelton, and unless new work was found these single men would have to go into camp. There were also a number *.of men on the local relief works who did not belong to Lyttelton.

Councillor A. H. Fowles proposed a scheme for renewing certain of the main streets, and he moved that Mr P. R. Climie and Mr F. Langbein be approached with a view of obtaining financial assistance for such work. The motion was lost.

On the motion of Councillor W. D. Gower it was decided that the certifying officer be informed that the council would only be able to find work for the unemployed B and C men for three months and work for single men until the men were dismissed by the Mount Herbert County Council. Relief Workers’ Wages.

The matter of enabling relief workers who secure casual work on the wharf to make up the time lost from their relief work was again before the Lyttelton Borough Council last night, when the following letter was received from the certifying officer at Lyttelton :

“ With reference to relief workers being given an opportunity of making up time lost through engaging in casual work of a non-recurring nature on days which have been allotted, the Commissioner now directs that the amount of earnings on such days is not to be taken into consideration, but that the worker is to be given the chance of making up the time during the particular week only, providing it is convenient for the Employing Authority to make suitable arrangements. It is to be clearly understood that the work performed is casual only and of a nonrecurring nature. In future, therefore, it will be left entirely to the Employing Authority and the workers will not now be required to report to me.” Councillor A. G. Sinclair stated that it was satisfactory news. Personal.

A motion of sympathy with the family of the late Mr Frederick Knights was passed at last night’s meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council.
