Suggested Alterations in

Streets

The Lyttelton Borough Council melf last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr VV. T. Lester), Councillors R. Fenton P. E. L. Collett, G. Halliday. A. G. Sinclair, A. H. Fowler, E. 11. Green, W. D. Gower and A. T. E. Miller.

A- requisition that a footpath be made at the junction of Voelas Road and God ley Quay was received from six residents of Godley Quay. Councillor Halliday said that it was really a continuation of the footpath across the road. It was decided to carry out the work.

The borough engineer submitted a report on the suggested alterations to rhe surface of London Street and Oxford Street and the laying down in permanent material of the sides of certain streets, the labour for which, it was should be done under the No. 5 unemployment scheme. It was decided that before arriving at a decision the council should get the borough solicitor’s opinion as to the council’s liability in regard to any accident that might occur through horses falling on account of the smooth surface, and further whether the Main Highways Board gwould allow London Street to be broken up.

The council accepted an offer to olant flowers on a bank above the new road at Diamond I-larbour.

The chairman of estates (Councillor Sinclair) reported upon the fencing required at Diamond Harbour on the Purau Road. An offer had been received from Messrs Barnard Bros, to supply the material and erect the fence, 16 chains, at £2 16s per chain. The council accepted the offer. It was decided to erect a street lamp at Agar’s corner. Diamond Harbour, and one In Dudley Road, as ask?d for by the Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association and Captain Chrisp, respectively.
