FREE TUITION,
Classes for Returned Men to be Discontinued.
An intimation in the “ Education Gazette ” of May 17, to" the effect that free tuition for disabled soldiers at the technical colleges was to be discontinued, was discussed at a meeting of the Disabled Soldiers’ Civil Re-estab-lishment Committee yesterday afternoon, and it was decided to make an appeal to the Education Department for the continuance of the privilege. The chairman (Mr H. Holland, M.P.) said he thought that the matter should be taken up with the Minister of Education.
Mr E. F. Willcox said, in view of the fact that the Department had not been involved in any extra cost, the committee would be justified in making a protest. Hundreds of returned soldiers had been trained at the Technical College, and had received great benefit from it. Mr A. 11. Parfitt said he understood that special provision for the free tuition was made in the Act. He did not think the regulations could override the Act. It was decided that Messrs Holland, P M. Robson and Leadley should wait on the Director of Education (Mr N. T. Lambourne) while he is in Christchurch, and that, if necessary, Mr Holland should interview the Minister of Education in Wellington.
