DEMAND FOR ELECTION.

Mr Savage jSpeaks at Wanganui.

WANGANUI, June 11

In the course of an address to a large audience in the Opera House to-night the leader of the Opposition, Mr M. T. Savage, stated that the patience of the people in respect to Government inactivity and blundering was remarkable. The unemployment problem, which was largely the result of the Government policy, was in itself sufficient reason for a general demand *foT a dissolution of Parliament at the earliest possible moment. The parties to the present Coalition Government had been tried individually and collectively and they had failed to justify the confidence of the people any longer. The Government should meet Parliament at the end of the month, and after having obtained supply and passed urgent legislation it should immediately ask for a dissolution. Ministers were not entitled to expect the people to wait until next year for an opportunity to pass judgment upon them The existence of a Royal Commission set up for the purpose of finding a policy for the Government to assist the dairy industry would, no doubt, be used as an excuse for Ministers remaining in office for a year longer than the three years period for which they were elected, but the dairy-farmers would have a lot to gain and nothing to lose by the holding of a general election of members while the Royal Commission was preparing its report. In any case, if the commission was expected to investigate fully and report on mortgage commitments and other aspects of the position of it could not possibly report until late in the year. „

Resolutions of confidence in the Labour Party and demanding a dissolution of Parliament not later than at the expiration of the period for which it was elected were carried with enthusiasm
