PROFITABLE YEAR.

National Council of Women. WORKING FOR PEACE. The annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women was held last evening, Mrs W. G. Roberts presiding. A letter was forwarded from the executive, which had been received from the preliminary committee of the Anti-War Movement, calling the attention of the branch to developments which had taken place in other cities of I\ew Zealand. An effort was being made to form an anti-war council to conduct a campaign against war and war propaganda. It was hoped that the local committee would take part in the anti-war convention to be held in Wellington next month. The committee sought the support of the branch. The letter was received. It was pointed out that the main plank of the council’s constitution was to work for peace. The secretary (Miss I. M. Jamieson) said that she had replied accordingly

Mrs H. R. Richards, in moving the adoption of the annual report (already published), said that she thought members would agree that the past year had been most profitable. The thanks of members was due to the secretary for the wonderful work she had done; and to Miss M A. Trent for the work she had done for unemployed women and girls. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mrs Roberts thanked members and the officers for the support they had given her during the past two years Dealing with the future, she said that the branch should consider taking a wider interest in local affairs. The branch had devoted a good deal of time to unemployment, but it should be remembered that many societies were represented in the council. Their interests should not be shelved. On the other hand, on special subjects, it might be better to concentrate and thus succeed. As an example of this, she said that the council had secured the raising of the marriage age this year. Election of Officers. Officers were elected as follows; President, Miss M A. Trent; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames T. E. Taylor and T. Tomlinson and Miss I M. Jamieson; honorary secretary. Miss F. Cooper; honorary treasurer. Miss E. A. Chaplin ; members of Dominion committee, Mesdames T. E. Taylor, W. G. Roberts. T. Tomlinson and J. Richards; Misses M. G. Havelaar, M. A. Trent, I. M. Jamieson and E. A. Chaplin. Votes of thanks were accorded to Mrs Roberts and ftjiss Jamieson on their retirement from active service. A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mr W. G. Roberts, the honorary auditor.
