POPPY DAY APPEAL.

Final arrangements for the annual Poppy Day appeal, which is to be held on Friday next, were made by representatives of various women’s organisations in the city at a meeting in th* Jellicoe Hall yesterday afternoon. The proceeds from the appeal will be devoted to the relief of distress amongst returned soldiers and their dependents. Mrs J. R. Evans presided over an attendance of about twenty. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr E. F. Willcox, said that poppies would be distributed to sellers from the Navy League Hall, which would be opened at 7 a.m. on Friday. Thirty thousand poppies were available for sale. Stands were allocated to various people who had expressed their willingness to assist in the appeal, and it. was arranged that Mrs J. S. Kelly and Miss H. Fisher should sell poppies at the Addington saleyards to-day. The advisability of taking up a collection was raised and it was explained that the Poppy Day appeal consisted of the straight out sale of poppies. Mr Willcox said he was trying to make arrangements for a concert to be given from thte balcony of the United Service Hotel. If the concert were given they would, of course, have some collection boxes among the crowd.
