SUMMIT ROAD.

Motoring to the Bridle Path. P.W.D. RELIEF JOBS. Good progress is being made with relief works now proceeding in various parts of the Christchurch district under the supervision cf the Public Works Department. The major work is being done on the Summit Road, where 685 men are engaged. Here much formation work, which is paving the way for the construction of one of the finest scenic routes in the district, is being pushed ahead steadily, and it is now possible to take a car from the Sign of the Kiwi to within three-quarters of a mile of the bridle path from Heathcote to Lyttelton. The trip, however, is not recommended as a pleasure jaunt. The driving is reported to be hazardous as, where rock has been encountered cn the route, the road has been made very narrow. Valuable river protection work which is calculated to prevent a wide area of land from being flooded periodically, has been carried out at Ashley, where 159 married men are occupied at task work. The men complete their month’s allocation of work at a stretch, and if they complete the task given them sooner than the time specified they are allowed to return to their homes. At the Wigram Aerodrome, steady progress is being made with levelling an area to provide additional landing grounds for aeroplanes. On this particular job there are 77 men at work. At the Lewis Pass and Lake Sumner roading works there are gangs of 55 and 16 single men employed.
