SPEEDIER SHUNTING.

Success of New Method at Christchurch.

Shunting by the gravitation method has been used in the marshalling section at the Christchurch railway goods yard since the beginning of this year, and after an extensive trial has been pronounced an outstanding success. To put the system into operation, the central portion of the yard was raised a few inches, giving a gradual slope towards Colombo Street and also towards the overhead bridge at the eastern end of the yard. The system has resulted in less handling of waggons and consequently a more expeditious assembly of trains. It has been found that the waggons run more smoothly under the gravitation method than they did under the old system when the yard was flat.
