THE THOUSAND MARK.

Mills Successful After Two Ducks. (Special to the " Star.”) AUCKLAND, April 10. By carrying his bat for 15 in Eden’s second innings against North Shore on Saturday, J. E. Mills, the Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer, took his total number of runs for the season past the 1000 mark. Three weeks ago. Mills needed only 13 to reach the four-figure total, but ducks in the representative game against Hawke’s Bay and in the first innings against North Shore left him in the same position—a baker’s dozen off his objective. The successful batting of the Shore team on Saturday made it appear that Mills would not get another strike as the game was the last of the season, But as soon as Shore had passed Eden’s total of 307 and assured themselves of a first innings win the captain declared the innings closed in order to give Mills a third and final chance to reach the thousand. It was a sporting action and Mills was thus able to take his season’s aggregate tp 1003.
