Smith (Waitemata) and Abbott (Picton) got badly off their course. Smith’s scull split Jackson’s canvas and sank him. Abbott ran ashore, but refloated himself, only to collide with the baths. At a later stage Smith narrowly avoided running ashore on two occasions, but went on to cross the line two lengths and a half ahead of Turner (Napier), who. with Tarrant (Picton) had sculled slowly but on a true course. Smith was disqualified for fouling Jackson and the race was awarded to Turner, with Tarrant second, and Abbott, who had survived his adventures, third.
