TO STAND DOWN.
Men on Several Local Relief Works. Advice has been received by the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association that a large number of relief workers have received notice to stand down and report at the bureau. The main works affected are the City Council and Cashmere Hills. A few of the men on the Waimakariri job will also be affected. It was stated this morning that on attending the bureau many of the men were going to be offered work at Ashley. A public meeting of protest against present standards of relief is to be held at Ashburton in the near future. A number of speakers from Christchurch will attend. February 25 is International Unemployment Day and it is to be observed in many centres of New Zealand.
