MINING NEWS.

Company Reports and Returns. In his fortnightly report to the directors of Skippers, Ltd., the mine manager, Mr R. D. Climie. states that full advantage has been taken of a spell of fine weather to work nine-hour days. The dry weather, however, cut down the amount of water coming down the race and consequently the amount of sluicing work done had suffered. Despite this, a section of the canal to accommodate the flume had been sluiced out to permit a start to be made on the erection of the steel plates. Three chains of steel decking had been laid down, and a commencement had been made to excavate the rock foundation at the intake to the flume. The power station plant had been overhauled thoroughly and a preliminary run carried out. This run disclosed that the main shaft was slightly bent, but it was not anticipated that this would seriously interfere with its operation. Pending the delivery of new pipes a temporary pipe line had been erected to supply the turbine. Another pipe line had been carried across the river and down to the lower end of the beach for sluicing purposes. Work was proceeding on the construction of the new dam on Davis Terrace, which would reduce the length of the pipe line by 40 per cent. Embankments were being built with the assistance of horses and scoop. The main water race had been repaired and maintained and leakages reduced to a minimum. The machinery on the dredge had been overhauled and re-assembled, all superfluous gear and weights being removed. It was expected that the cookhouse, din-ing-room and bunkhouse would be com pleted by the end of the month. A suitable pile driving frame was nearly completed and would be ready for use when the piling arrived at th end of this week. “ While other sections of the work will not be neglected,’* states Mr Climie, “ a special effort is being made to burry the driving of this piling to permit the recovery of gold from Mr Smith’s paddock at the earliest possible date.” Mahakipawa Goldfields, Ltd.
