World-wide Demonstrations of Sympathy. The following cable messages from various points show the widespread sympathy that is felt with the Austrian bocialists. In New York 3000 Socialists and Communists clashed with the police to-day in an anti-Dollfuss demonstration beiore the Austrian Consulate in a large office building at the corner of Fortvsecond Street and Fifth Avenue. The police repeatedly charged with their batons and severely cut and bruised many of the demonstrators. The Socialists are planning a similar action to that of British Labour to raise funds for the succour of Austrian Socialists. Some of the Liberal newspapers are violently attacking Dr Dollfuss. For example, the “New York Post” comments that the Austrian Republican Defence Corps is fighting the battle for Democracy, while Dr Dollfuss “Is doing the dirtv work for Hitlerism.’’ In London subscriptions for Austrian workers are pouring in to the Labour Party headquarters. The joint Labour Council made a statement that the workers were not resisting constitutional government, but fighting a ruthless dictatorship which is determined to destroy' constitutional methods in

order to make the dictatorship permanent. In Paris, Mr Walter Citrine, president of the International Federation of Trade Unions, presided at an international Labour meeting. M. Leon Jouhaux, president of the Confederation of Labour, was also present.
