The “Daily' Telegraph” states: Anxious for an Australian pilot to win the London-to-Melbourne air race, an Australian sportsman has placed £SOOO unreservedly at Sir Charles Kingsford Smithy’s disposal for the race. Smithy stated: "America leads the world now with high-speed plants. If England or Germany can produce a faster plane I will fly it. I will leave for England via the United States in July-”
