PROGRESS LEAGUE.

Meeting Held at North Beach. The monthly meeting of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association was held in the Peace Memorial Hall on Monday evening, Mr A. Peverill presiding over a fair attendance. On the motion of the president, it was decided to congratulate the North Beach Gala and Foreshore Improvement Society on having obtained an allocation of £4OO from the last art union to pay off the debt on the Memorial Hall, thus obtaining a substantial asset for the district. The New Brighton Borough Council, in reply to the league’s request regarding bicycle rests, intimated that the matter was receiving Consideration and (hat the council was prepared to approve of a suitable form of rest. Mr C. W. Lester drew attention to the lack of drinking fountains adjacent to the foreshore. It was decided to write to the Borough Council asking if more of these facilities could be provided between the Surf Club well and Beach Road. Mr R. D. Martin mentioned the deplorable condition of Tonks Street and Osborne Terrace. Councillor Thomson explained that the chairman of works was reporting on the state of the roads. The secretary mentioned that the repairs to roads required more rolling. Mr E. Stevens drew attention to the condition of the side channels in Jubilee Avenue and the lack of flushing facilities. It was decided to bring this matter under the notice of the Borough Council. The president reported that Travis Road and Bassett Street had been declared secondary highways and the Waimairi Council was to proceed with the tar-sealing. It was decided to write asking the council when the work would be commenced.
