PAYMENT OF RATES.

Moderate Response up to Date. Generally speaking, local body rates this year are being paid in about the same volume as last year, such small changes as are noticeable being in the direction of an improvement. Of the total citv levy of £331,432 for this year, £64,078 had been paid up till yesterday. On the corresponding date last year the amount paid was £54,651. The amount outstanding yesterday was £267,353 as against £268,702 on the corresponding date last year. Expressed in terms of percentages 19.33 per cent of the levy 1 had been paid yesterday as against 19.37 per cent a year ago. Yesterday was the last day left to New Brighton ratepayers to escape the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty, i and the staff was kept busy throughout the day dealing with the rush of payments, The total levy this year is £IS,S9S, and of this sum £11.626 had been collected when the council’s offices closed yesterday. The levy last year was £16,838, and the amount collected prior to the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty was £11,731. 1 he position of the various local bodies, together with the penalty date in each case, are given in the following table:
