SEASIDE TRAMS.
Cheap Excursions Prove Popular.
The cheap excursion fares on the seaside trams were inaugurated this morning, and the early indications were that they will prove exceedingly popular. There was a very noticeable increase in the volume of traffic from the seaside suburbs to the city on the morning trams, while the outward traffic was also well above normal. The timetable trams were running at full capacity, and on the Sumner route it was necessary to provide two additional trams to cope with the excursion traffic. Tramway officials expressed the opinion that if the weather had been warmer there would have been a much larger volume of traffic to the seaside. They stated that it was too early to form an opinion as to the financial results of the innovation, but they were satisfied with the results this morning. The new fares are 7d return to New Brighton, North Beach and Redcliffs, and 9d return to Sumner for adults, and 3d return to all places for children. There are no restrictions as to the times when the excursion fares are available, and they apply to all trams to and from the seaside suburbs.
