ENGLISH BELLES.
Dazzling Display at Ball at Birmingham. LONDON, December 17. Mannequins, glittering in the most artistic productions of local jewellers, paraded at the Birmingham jewellers’ ball, for which the trade lent its choicest specimens, valued altogether at £150,000. Worn by a mannequin was a necklace of emer: Ids valued at £7OOO All the jewels were collected at the offices of the Jewellers’ Association and taken to the hotel under an escort of plainclothes motor-cyclists. Armed men were stationed in the room where the jewellery was later displayed. A dozen detectives and two policewomen, all in evening dress, later mingled with the guests.
