BACK TO NORMAL.

Business Quiet After Christmas. After the frenzy of pre-Christmas buying, business suffered its customary relapse when the shops re-opened today. The holiday spirit and its general air of lassitude seemed to pervade the city, affecting for a time both shoppers and employees. Grocers, however, were fairly bus3’, with housewives replenishing depleted larders and placing big orders to last them over the New Year holidays. Bakers were welcome callers, as no supplies of fresh bread had been received since Saturday. Hereford Street lacked its usual bustle, and, though most of the commercial houses were open, very little business was done. The staffs, as elsewhere, did not feel in the mood for work, with holiday experiences to exchange. The trading banks were -closed, to reopen to-morrow morning, but the Post Office Savings Bank was open for business. The Government offices w-ere open. The banks will be closed for the New Year holiday's on Monday and Tuesday' next, and the Government Buildings will be closed on Saturday and Monda>\ Late shopping night will be observed on Friday night, when the shops will close at ten o’clock. The usual Saturday' half-holiday will be observed, and then the shops will close until Wednesday next.
