Canadian Rum-runners on the Run. VANCOUVER, December 2. With the approach of legalised liquor in the United States, Canada has launched its biggest drive against liquor smugglers, 500 arrests having been ordered. The persons involved are rum-runners operating along the Lower St Lawrence River. One unnamed Scottish distiller, who furnished bulk supplies for a very extensive traffic, will also be prosecuted From Glasgow the liquor was brought to the French island of Miquelon (St Pierre), in the Gulf of St Lawrence, where part of the shipment was “ bootlegged ” into Boston and New ork territory. Huge shipments were also made to Quebec and Montreal for sale at reduced prices, in competition with Canadian Government stores’ liquor. The investigation was the largest ever undertaken by the Canadian Mounted Police, who expect to gather a large amount of unpaid income tax, in addition to sending scores of <he ringleaders to prison. In one recent seizure the entire list of those involved was captured.
