IMPORTANT TEST.
Will Catapult New Type of Plane. AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received December 8, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, December 7. Hitherto aircraft fitted with hulls have never been catapulted, but the firing of a Vickers Amphibian “ Five,” with a single Pegasus engine, will shortly be carried out at the R.A.F. experimental station at Ilartlesham. The catapult to be used has been placed on the aerodrome and is similar to those shortly to be installed on H.M.A.S. Canberra, Australia and Albatross. The plane's crew of four on the first experimental catapulting will include Wing-Commander Marsden and FlightLieutenant Swinbourne, R.A.A.F.
The machine must develop a speed of 65 miles an hour from a stationary position within 24ft, imposing a great strain on the amphibian and its crew. If the tests are satisfactory, the type probably will be ordered to equip the Australian Fleet Air Arm.
