DAIRY INDUSTRY.

Question of Supplying Factories. RESTRICTIONS PROPOSED. ("Star” Parliamentary* Reporter.) WELLINGTON, November 21. Dairy companies throughout the Dominion are showing keen interest in the Bill which will probably be introduced in the House this week to prevent suppliers changing over from one factory to another during any one season. A similar provision has been in operation by regulation during the past few years, but the Appeal Court held this to be invalid, and the position is to be re-e.stablished .by legisla.tion. The measure will give suppliers two months at the beginning of each season to decide as to which factory they will supply with milk. Having made that decisioq, they will not be allowed to change until the end of the season. The measure is exciting more attention in the North Island than in the South, as there is much more competition between factories in the north. It will apply to the South Island with equal force, however, and, where there is "competition at present, interest is also keen. Mere restriction of competition is not the object of the measure. It has been found that where factories are engaged in what might be termed . cut ; thro # lt ” competition, milk which is rejected as being under-grade by one factory, is accepted by another. Hence the quality of exportable dairy produce suffers, and, as a result, the reputation of the Dominion’s products in London may be affected.
