EX-MAYOR DEAD.
Mr S. Manning Held Office in 1890. The death has occurred, at the age of ninety-two, of Mr S. Manning, founder of the brewery firm of S. Manning and Co., and a former Mayor of Christchurch. The late Mr Manning came to New Zealand at the age of sixteen, and went first to Mrrmaduke Dickson’s run as a shepherd. He then came down .to work with his father, Mr W. Manning, in the old Suffolk Brewery in Barbadoes Street. At the age of nineteen he opened his own business in Lower High Street, on the present site of Manning’s Brewery. He continued that business for many years until he sold his interest to the present company of S. Manning and Co., Ltd. Air Manning was a director of Weeks, Ltd., up to the time of his death, and was one of the original directors of that company. He was also a director of the Glenmore Brick and Tile Company, and was at one time a director of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, from which Jae resigned some years ago. Other business interests were in the Provident Insurance Company and the Mutual Benefit Building Society, but he retired from the directorates of these two concerns some years ago. Since his retirement, Mr Manning has lived at his home in Holly Road and devoted most of his time to his hobbies of bowling and horticulture, although he kept up a keen interest in the firms with which he was still actively interested as a director. He was a life-long member of the Christchurch Bowling Club, of which he was the oldest .surviving member. Up till recently he was seen on the green almost daily, and was a popular figure among bowlers an& other associates generally. As Mayor of Christchurch forty years ago, Mr Manning was a prime mover in bringing the outside boroughs into the city. Other public offices Mr Manning held included that of City Sinking Fund Commissioner. His service to the public was given, freely but unostentatiously, and he was a man who never sought public recognition. He was married twice, the first time to Miss Ellen Piper, of Suffolk, England, in 1863. After the death of his first wife, Mr Manning married Mrs Healey, widow of a well-known brewer, of Nelson. Mr Manning is survived by his widow and three sons and three daughters, all of the first marriage. The sons are: Dr L. S. Manning (Fendalton), Mr R. P. M. Manning, of Auckland, and Mr M. S. H. Manning, of Christchurch; and the daughters, Miss Edith Manning, of Christchurch, Mrs E. Uphaifi, of Wellington, and Mrs T. H. Caldwell, of Tokomaru Bay. There are also thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will leave Mr Manning’s late residence, 17, Holly Road, at 2.30 p.m., on Wednesday, for the Barbadoes Street Cemetery. He was senior constable in New Zealand when he retired eight years ago. MISSIONARY’S DEATH. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. November 21. The death occurred to-day of Miss Helen MacGregor, who was for thirty years connected with the Church of Scotland Mission in Madras, India. She was the first New Zealand missionary to enter that field. Miss MacGregor was the daughter of the late Rev James MacGregor, Colombo Church, Oamaru, and sister of Mr Justice MacGregor. She had, lived in retirement at Seatoun for the past five years.
