“FATHER OF PETONE.”

Death of Early Resident of Wellington. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, July 3. The death is announced of Mr Thomas Rodgers, ninety-three years of age. He was born on February 29, 1840. in a small manuka bach on Petone beach, and was afterwards known as the “ father of Petone.” Mr Rodgers received a Crown grant of fifty' acres in recognition of his being the first white child born in Wellington Province. lie came to Manawatu in 1877 and farmed here until his retirement.
