Wellington Win Wilding Shield Series. WILL MEET CANTERBURY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. January 14. Wellington, by her wins to-day in the Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket tennis matches, have qualified to meet Canterbury in the final on Monday and Tuesday next. C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) was too good in volleying and smashing for the hard driving and accurate lobbing of Stedman (Auckland). In addition, when Stedman went to the net, he was passed down the sidelines by Malfroy with brilliantly accurate driving. Stedman has played much better tennis. Noel Wilson played better tennis today to beat Morrison, who also improved on yesterday’s form. Wilson, who was hitting forehand drives cleanly and serving well, just won out against Morrison’s cross-court driving and volleying. Wilson’s service was the deciding factor, especially with the breeze behind him. Rowlands (Auckland) was too aggressive for Ferkins. He concentrated on his backhand, and killed the many weak returns. In the Nunneley Casket, Miss J. Ramsay, with accurate cut strokes to the side lines, kept Miss France constantly moving, so that she tired and made mistakes that gave Auckland the victory. Miss M. Whyte (Wellington) beat Mrs Napier (Auckland) by steadier and more forceful tennis in a baseline duel. Mrs H. M. Dykes was too accurate in her cross court driving, net play and smashing for the purely baseline game of Miss Macfarlane. Results:— Wilding Shield. Rowlands (Auckland) beat Ferkins (Wellington), 6-3, 7-5. Malfroy (Wellington) beat Stedman (Auckland), 6-2, 6-3. Wilson (Wellington) beat Morrison (Auckland), 8-6, 3-6, 7-5. F"ranee (Wellington) beat Sturt (Auckland), 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Wilson and Ferkins (Wellington) beat Rowlands and Morrison (Auckland), 6-2, 6-4. Nunneley Casket. Miss Whyte (Wellington) beat Miss Napier (Auckland), 6-3, 6-4. Miss Ramsay (Auckland) beat Mrs France (Wellington), 7-5, 6-1. Mrs Dykes (Wellington) beat Miss Macfarlane (Auckland), 6-4, 6-3. Miss Knight (Auckland) beat Miss Howe (Wellington), 6-0, 6-8, 6-2. Misses Macfarlane and Knight (Auckland) beat Mrs Dykes and Miss Howe (Wellington), 6-1, 6-4. Mrs France and Miss Whyte (Wellington) beat Miss Ramsay and Mrs Napier (Auckland), 8-6, 6-4. (Results of yesterday's matches appear on page 16.)
