DEATH OF MR J. H. BRETT

Mr James Harris Brett, of Fendal ton, who died recently, was the second son of the Hon Colonel de Renzi Brett, who on arrival in New Zealand from England in 1867 took up land in Canterbury, naming his station “'Jirwee.’ Mr Brett was a keen spo sman, and was the owner of Mousetrap when that horse won the Grand National Steeplechase in 1878. He also took a keen interest in politics and identified himself for many years with the Reform Party. For the past forty years he had been a wellknown and highly respected resident of Fendalton. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs C. W. Haselden, of Stratford, and Mrs F. N. Thompson, of Fendalton, and seven grandchildren.
