CANTEEN FUNDS.

Request for a £20,000 Grant. A Christchurch remit asking for a grant of £20,000 this year from the Canteen Fund for the purpose of relieving distress and providing employment for returned soldiers was passed unanimously at the annual conference of the Dominion Returned Soldiers’ Association in Wellington this week. Mr W. E. Leadley, chairman of the Unemployment Relief Committee of the Christchurch R.S.A., who returned from the conference to-day, said that it was his personal opinion that the Canteen Fur\d Board would agree to the request. The chairman of the board (Sir Andrew Russell), who presided at the conference, said that he was in favour of the grant being made, but he could not answer for the other members of the board. As, however, the canteen fund belonged to the returned soldiers of the Dominion, and the R.S.A. was the only organised body that could speak on their behalf, the unanimous request of the conference should carry a great deal of weight.

At present the Canteen Fund Board is making grants of £IOOO a month for the relief of distress among unemployed returned soldiers throughout the Dominion. The Christchurch R.S.A. receives £l3O a month of this grant.
