SPEEDSTERS FINED.

Sequel to Midnight Chase. Russell Bunn and George Ferguson were each fined £lO and costs in the Magistrate’s Court this morning as a sequel to a midnight chase after their motor-car by a constable who commandeered a private car. The charges against the two young men were that they drove in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Bunn was also fined 20s and costs for driving an unlicensed car and 10s and costs for driving without a license. Ferguson was fined 20s and costs for driving an unlicensed car and ordered to pay costs for failing to stop at the signal of a constable. Sub-Inspector G. B. Edwards said that at midnight on June 5, Constable Cunningham noticed a mstor-car being driven along Cashel Street over the Bridge of Remembrance to Oxfoi’d Terrace and Montreal Street at an estimated speed of from 40 to 50 miles an hour. An hour later the constable saw the car again and gave chase in a private car. The constable followed the car to Rolleston Avenue, the speedometer showing over fifty miles an hour without gaining on the car in front. Finally the car in front pulled up and Bunn told the constable he had been driving the car. It later trans pired that Bunn had been taking the responsibility for Ferguson, but when five summonses were served on him at Dunedin the facts came to light. Bunn had been driving the car when it was seen in Cashel Street on the first occasion, but Ferguson was at the wheel the second time.

Charges against Bunn of failing to stop on the signal of a constable and using a motor-car when the insurance premium had not been paid were withdrawn. A charge against Ferguson of driving a car when the insurance premium had not been paid was also withdrawn.
