New Zealand Visitors Abroad. (Special to the “ Star.”) LONDON, May 27. The Hon Mrs Algernon Borthwick (nee Gorrie, of Auckland) gave a dance for her younger daughter, Miss Rachel Borthwick, on May 24, at her London residence, 8, Cadogan Square. The dance duly took piace, but, unfortunately, two days beiore, Miss Borthwick was taken ill with German measles and so was prevented from attending. Mrs Borthwick received the guests wearing her Court gown of cream lace embroidered with crystals. Her daughter-in-law, Mrs Patrick Borthwick, was among those who gave dinner parties prior to the dance, and wore her presentation gown of cream romaine. Miss Letitia Borthwick wore a dress of pale blue angel-skin. Those invited to the dinner given by Mr and Mrs Patrick Borthwick included Miss Audrey Williams, Mr Tim Williams, Miss Isabel Turrell (who wore a gown of green angel-skin). Among those invited to the dance were Lady Norah Jellicoe, Lady Prudence Jellicoe, Misses Fergusson, Mr W. R. B. Watson, Miss Aline BaTton, Miss Hutchison, Mr Garth Williams.

A New Zealander who was presented at the first of this season’s Courts at Buckingham Palace was Madame Pedro Jose Vargas (nee Dorothea Lowe of Christchurch). The presentation was made by Madame Alfonso Lopez, wife of the Colombian Minister. Madame Vargas wore a beautiful gown of deep cream satin beaute, with train of the same material finely embroidered with seed pearls and diamante. She carried a bouquet of pale yelloworchids and her ornaments were diamonds and pearls. Mrs J. F. Bennett and Miss P. Bennett (Blenheim), and Mr S. D. Paul (Wellington), travelled by the Orford. arriving last week, and they intend to spend some time in England. They have taken Baroness de Serclae’s furnished house at Ashtead, in Surrey, for some time, and will make that their headquarters. They have planned to motor about England and the Continent.

Mrs G. Frenglev and her daughter (Christchurch) arrived in Dublin in the middle of May, and are staying there with Mrs Mayne. They hope to tour Ireland, England and France by motor-car in the near future. So far as plans have been made, Mrs Frengley expdets to return to New Zealand in 1933.

Miss E. S. Sheate and Miss Whiteside left Christchurch in April for Sydney, and, after some days of sightseeing they joined the Largs Bay, in which they had a very comfortable and delightful voyage to England, via Suez. They are at present enjoying London and the countryside in the early spring. Mr and Mrs B. E. H. Whitcombs (Christchurch) travelled from Australia by the Mooltan, and reached England early in April. Friends of. the former will be very glad to know that his health has much improved, and, although he has been busy in the city ever since he came, he and Mrs Whitcombe have been able to spend week-ends with relatives and friends ip Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and Devonshire. They ex pect to leave in August on their homeward journey.
