FOR AUSTRALIA.

Plans for Gaine Carrington and Peter Jackson. The two-year-old Gaine Carrington, who has been spelling since winning the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie, has completed his holiday and is again doing light work under J. Fryer’s direction at Hawera. The three-year-old Peter Jackson, who has also been resting since his St Leger victories, is still out in the paddock, but will be taken in hand again in the course of another week or two. A campaign in Australia has been decided upon for Gaine Carrington and Peter Jackson, and, unless present intentions are altered J. Fryer will take them to Sydney after the Wellington winter meeting in July. Gaine Carrington’s mission wilL be the A.J.C. Derby and Peter Jackson will be entered for the important spring handicaps at Randwick and Flemington. Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington are half-brothers from the Martian mare Left and were among the best of their ages in New Zealand this season. Gaine Carrington looks to be the makings of a fine three-year-old and Peter Jackson is a genuine stayer who should be equal to making a fine showing in the Melbourne Cup.

WAIRARAPA NOTES. Candidates in Work for Otaki Meeting. (Special to the “Star.”) MASTERTON, May 19. Trader Horn is showing much better form in his track work. The Cape Horn gelding should be fit by the time the Otaki meeting comes round. At Masterton Mr Kemball’s gelding started in two seven-furlong races, and the distance appeared to be just a trifle too much. At Otaki Trader Horn has been entered in six-furlong events, and this should suit him better. Atholspear, who seemed to be a little stiff at Opaki, is now striding along more freely. Burgess has been putting plenty of work into the Greyspear representative, and he should be in good heart at Otaki. Imperial Fame, following on his success at Opaki, is galloping well at work, and is probably now at the peak of his form. He is to make the journey to Otaki next month, and should- be able to repeat his first day performance at Masterton. The Crown Imperial gelding, who was picked up by his owner for a mere “ song,” has, so far, proved a small gold mine. The Cape Horn gelding Cape Town should prove profitable for his owner, Mr W. R. Kemball. Built on right lines, Cape Town demonstrated at Masterton that he could gallop by the comparatively easy manner in which he scored a double. Since that meeting he has shown considerable improvement, and should be in splendid condition for Otaki. Though Thermopylae did not run very prominently at the Masterton meeting, she showed a good turn of speed for five furlongs. Neich has been giving the filly plenty of the right sort of work lately, and she is steadily improving. Araios is steadily improving, but may still be short of a gallop or two when the Otaki meeting comes round. The manner in which the Arausio gelding galloped at Masterton did not impress. Orby’s Choice is reported to be shaping excellently on the track, and the Orby’s Pride gelding should strip a sound proposition at Otaki. Acrelict is being put through steady work at Otaki. and should be able to display better form at the West Coast meeting in June than was the case at Opaki last month. Baskier may make the trip to the Otaki meeting, but his track efforts latelv have not been impressive. Tobacco Land keeps steadilv at work, and has improved considerablv during the past week or two. The Acre gelding should salute the judge before long, and form suggests that it will be round about the Otaki meeting. PROSPECTS OF LUCESS. When Lucess finished second to Prince Lu in the Great Northern Hurdle Race at Ellerslie last June, and a few days later ran third in the Great Northern Steeples, his prospects of winning an important jumping event appeared good. However, his subsequent form was not up to the standard expected of him, and evidently his two hard races in the Northerns proved too much for him. Lucess has not done much racing this season, but his third in the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie in March was a useful effort, for he was at that time a long way from his best racing condition. He has not started since, but is reported to be a much improved horse, and a few days ago at Cambridge was responsible for an excellent jumping display over the steeplechase fences. Lucess figures in both Great Northern events to be decided next month, though nothing definite is known at present concerning the programme mapped out for him. However, if reserved for the steeplechase his prospects cannot be disregarded.
