TROTTING NOTES.

@®a®®®aisa@ ® ® ® ® is ® a ® ® 'DOMINATIONS for the trotting events at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock on Saturday night. * * * * Gumdigger, who came from the South some little time ago and went into C. S. Donald’s stable, started twice at the Oamaru meeting, but did not show much speed. He will require to make a lot of improvement before he wins a race. The Wrack pacer Copper Nob, who is trained by R. Townley, raced very consistently at Oamaru and it may not be long before he is a winner. Although his trainer usually devotes most of his time to trotters, he frequently has a useful pacer under his charge.

A useful sort in Neola was racing at Oamaru. She is a four-year-old by Nelson Bingen from that good mare Nellie Scott, and is trained in Central Otago. In the Advance Handicap, Neola was prominent for a mile and then dropped back. She should do a lot better with some more racing. BY AMERICAN SIRE.

C. S. Donald has a number of young horses by the American stallion Jack Potts. Most of them have been handled and all go at the pacing gaiL without requiring 'the aid of hopples. I hey are rising two years and at present they are all out in the paddock, but it is the intention of the Belfast trainer to make a start on them in the near future.

Great Chenault was an acceptor at Oamaru last week, but was. not started. The Peter Chenault gelding, who is now in J. Bryce’s stable, gave promise of being a high class pacer, but he contracted the bad habit of hitting his knees and he has done little racing this season. He has both speed and stamina and if he can be cured of his disability he will soon be racing in better company. , KEEPING SOUND.

Lindbergh, who has not done much racing of late, started in the mile harness event at Oamaru. Giving away 48yds in a 2min 16sec class, the Author Dillon pacer went quite a good race making up a lot of his and being not far behind at the finish. Lindbergh is not usually a quick beginner, but he went off better than usual, and he seems to be keeping fairly-sound. STOPPED BADLY.

The Travis Axworthy trotter, Mataunga, was well backed for the mile and a half event at Oamaru and he had every chance from a smart beginning. The last quarter of a mile, however, found him wanting and he was stopping badly at the end. Mataunga has a lot of speed, but has not been working well of late and his trainer was not confident of success. The race may do him a lot of good and, being only a four-year-old, he has plenty of time to show his undoubted speed in a race. RED SPUR’S FORM.

Although the three-year-old Red Spur was made favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap at Oamaru, he could only finish fourth. The previous week the Oamaru pacer won a double at the Forbury Park meeting in brilliant style. At that meeting the track was somewhat holding on the first day and Red Spur went 3min 2S 2-ssec from a 3min 39sec mark. Giving away 36 yards in the same class on the second day, he won by a length in 3min 24 2-ssec, but the class of the opposition did not seem to be particularly good. The track on this occasion was very fast. At Oamaru, the grass track was somewhat holding, and was cut up a good deal when the seventh race was run, Worthy King winning in 3min 30sec from a 3min 32sec mark. Red Spur did not seem able to muster up his undoubted speed in his last effort, but his performance, considering the track, was a very good one and he was finishing on well. It looks as though J. Henderson has the making of a high grade pacer in the Wrack — Gianella gelding. TROTTING FIXTURES. May 21—Ashburton C.R.C. May 21—Otautau R.C. Difficulties which the St John Ambulance Brigade experienced in attending in case of accidents at the Peninsula Racing Club’s meetings at Motukarara were referred to in a discussion at the meeting of the association last evening. The subject was brought up by Mr 11. L. Bowker reporting that the Racing Club would consider at its next meeting the question of making a donation to the association. One member stated that the ambulance men who went to Motukarara objected to having to pay their own train fare and then wait for some six weeks for a refund. There was no trouble over lunch tickets at the course, as the women assistants invited the men to lunch when they were “hanging round the booth,” as they usually were when lunch was on. (Laughter.) Another member stated that the van was not sent to the course unless needed. A jockey had been injured at 'the last meeting, and the association had received no recompense from the club for its service. Dr M. G. Louisson: It is a matter of asking. The committee of the club probably did not realise that the ambulance had had to make a special trip, to Motukarara. The secretary: Last year the club made a small profit, the first for some years. It is in a pretty bad way now. “Aren’t we all?” questioned a member. Colonel F. W. W. Dawson: Isn’t the Government making a rebate to the club? Mr Bowker was authorised to continue negotiations with the club. RACING FIXTURES. May 21—Ashburton C.R.C. May 21—Otautau R.C. May 21—Waikato R.C. May 28—South Canterbury J.C.
