Gatherings Held in Town anc Country. HOUSE-WARMING PARTY. Mr and Mrs Kettle, of Horner Street, Papanui, assisted by Mesdames Banard and M’Causland, gave an evening recently to welcome Mr and Mrs Newton and family to their new home. Competitions were won by Mrs Beilby, Mr Banard, Mr Newton and Master Colin Newton. Mr R. Morris gave concertina selections, and songs were contributed by Mesdames H. R. Smith, Banard, Kettle, Fletcher and M’Causland. Mr and Mrs Newton were the recipients of a basket of gifts. A pleasant evening was given in the Dickens Street Hall recently in honour of Mr Martin Walsh, when his friends and fellow-workers met to bid him farewell on his return to Ireland to attend the Eucharistic Congress and visit his relatives. Music for dancing was supplied by Miss D. Leatham and Mr L. Crequer. Mr F. M’Fall was M.C. Songs were contributed by Mr W. Johnston. After supper Mr A. Griffey, on behalf of those present, presented the guest with a greenstone chain and gold sovereign case. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss M. Shannon and Mr 11. Coe. A young people’s tennis tournament arranged by Mrs C. L. Hart, Rugby Street, in aid of the funds of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, was held yesterday afternoon on the Elmwood Courts. In addition to the players there -were a number of spectators. Afternoon tea was provided by members of the Women’s Auxiliary. Prizes were given by Mrs C. L. Hart, Messrs Tisdall and A. Dej\ The winners were: Miss Helen Hervey, Miss Jannette Johnston, Miss Alison Mac Gibbon and Mrs Basil Clark.
