A CONFERENCE.
Employers and Workers to Meet. THE ARBITRATION BILL. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, March 5. The Government’s decision not to appoint select committees this season is giving serious concern to trade unions, especially a sthe Prime Minister has made it clear that he has no intention to sumbit the amendment to the Arbitration Act to a committee. He was approached privately by a large deputation from the Wellington Trades and Labour Council to-day, the deputation being supported by Labour members, urging that evidence be received regarding *the ngw measure and its probable effect.
Again Mr Forbes was adamant regarding the submission of the Bill to a committee, the Government’s view being that the opinions of all parties were already well known and that the only result would be delay.
However, it is understood that when the deputation, as a last resort, urged that at least there should be a conference of employers and workers on the situation and that the passage of the measure be deferred until this has taken place, the Prime Minister expressed his willingness to accept this compromise.
