PRICE OF QUARTER LOAF.

Cannot Reasonably be Under 3d, States Baker.

When the price of .bread came down during the week to lOd over the counter and lid delivered for the fourpound loaf, the price of the lib, or quarter loaf, vas brought down from 3d to 2ld by some grocers and other retailers. A correspondent states that the price has now been raised to 3d again, a move which he condemns as being hard on poor people and old age pensioners.

A leading city baker stated to-day that the price could not reasonably be below 3d; When prices fell a few days ago some retailers did not take various factors into account at the time and came down to 2£d, but it had since been pointed out to them that the bakers were at present making a reduction in prices greater than the decrease in flour prices warranted and accordingly could not allow discount to retailers.

The bakers had also recommended to shopkeepers that the charge for the quarter loaf should be 3d because it was recognised that as much service was given in selling a small loaf as a four pound loaf. The price of the quarter loaf when delivered was 3d, for the cost of leaving it at the door made it impossible to sell at less than 3d, and, in addition, the amount representing a quarter of lid was particularly hard to arrive at.
