LICENSE CANCELLED.

Driver was Intoxicated in Charge of Car.

Douglas Matson, a clerk, aged thirtyone, of Wairarapa Terrace, was fined £5 and costs and his driver’s license was cancelled by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M, this morning. He pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Cashel Street. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the accused first attracted attention just after eleven last night by waving his hands in front of the Grand Hotel as if he were going to fight someone in the doorway. A constable found that there was a man in the doorway whom the accused, who was in a more or less drunken condition, had offered to drive to one of the parks for a fight. The constable came to the conclusion that Matson was not drunk at the time, and gave him a chance to go home provided he left the car or had it removed 1 to a garage. The constable then went away, but, on seeing the accused get into the driver’s seat of the car, hurried back and arrested him. The car had not been started. Matson told the magistrate that he had partaken of a bottle of wine. He got into the car for a sipoke and to let effects wear off. Stating that he would take that fact into consideration with the circumstance that Matson had not driven the car, the magistrate fined him £5 and costs and cancelled his license, so that he would not be able to drive before May 31 next.
