A DILIGENT STUDENT.
Hazel Hunter easily qualifies as a diligent student by having won the botany prize at the Lyttelton District High School, but in order to gain the honour she had to tramp about 300 miles. This is calculated on the distances she travelled during the gathering of the specimens for her schedule and included several trips up Mount Herbert and other hills of the Peninsula. Commenting on her efforts, Mr W. T. Lester, acting-chairman of the school committee, stated that science advanced only through hard work such as that. Not everyone at her age, he said, would travel 300 miles to collect specimens of flora. It showed commendable enthusiasm on her part.
