Gatherings Held in the Town and Country. BRIDE-ELECT HONOURED. Miss Mavis Truscott was the guest of honour at a gift evening held recently at the home of Mrs H. Rich, Hillsborough. The bride-elect received many useful gifts. An enjoyable evening was spent in games, dancing and community singing. Among those present were: Mcsd.imes H. Rich, F. Truscott, G. Soanes and H. Truscott; Misses Mavis Truscott, R. Ferrans, S. Rich, J. Rippin, A. Rich, M. Rippin, M. Rich, J. Abraham, E. Rich, Marjorie Truscott, R. Rich, L. Hay, F. Soanes and Monica Rich; Messrs H. Rich, A. Rippin, H. Truscott. G. Soanes, H. Bull, R. Austin, M. Peterson, D. Stewart, E. Morrison, E. Grafton, D. Costelloe, E. Rippin and N. Truscott. Bible Glass Social. St Paul’s (Papanui) Young Women’s Bible Class, under the leadership of Mrs Garrett, entertained the Belfast Bible Classes and friends in the schoolroom on Thursday evening. A play by A. A. Milne, “ The Boy Comes Home,” was given. The parts were taken by Misses D. Thomson, I. Corsbie, L. Murray, I. Witte, and V. Clarke. Miss Constance Church was in charge, and the item was most successful. Orchestral selections were given by Misses V. Clarke, I. Clarke and W. Ward; a vocal solo by Miss B. Thomson, and glees by the Bible Class choir, under Miss Constance Church. Miss Joyce Fletcher’s band also played selections. A competition was won by Miss Heywood. A birthday cake was cut by the Rev W. H. and Mrs Orbell, and the Belfast ladies presented Papanui with a Christmas cake cut by the Rev 11. O. and Mrs Ilanby. Mr Garrett thanked all those who had helped with the year’s activities. Mr Orbell spoke in appreciation of the good work done by Mrs Garrett. The Rev 11. O. Hanby thanked the St Paul’s class for a pleasant gathering. A feature of the evening was the opening of the missionary box by Miss Joan Corsbie, the secretary. The latter part of the evening was spent in dancing. Evening at Papanui. Mrs W. 11. Orbell entertained a number of friends at the Vicarage, Papanui, on Wednesday evening. A meeting of the Refreshment Committee which had been formed in connection with the annual fete was held and afterwards the evening was spent in games and competitions. The competitions were won by Mesdames Syme, Murray and Tomkies. Those present were:—Mesdames Plows, Bond, Tomkies, Wilson, CaverSyme, Murray, Langdon, M’Cullough, Syme, Murray, Langdon, M’Cullogh and Purse. Social at Training College. On the occasion of the closing of the Normal District High School a social was held at the Training College Hall on Thursday evening. Games and competitions were entered into by all. The head master, Mr W. Coll, spoke on behajf of the teachers and staff of the Normal School and Mr Donnelly replied on behalf of the present pupils. Mr O’Flynn, on behalf of the parents, spoke briefly of the great loss the closing of the school would be. On behalf of the old pupils Mr Brown expressed the hope* that all pupils would join in the activities of the Old Pupils’ Association. Party For Pupils. Miss Mavis Roi, A.T.C.L., gave a break-up party to her -music pupils recently at her home, Church Street, Oxford. Musical items were interspersed with games and competitions, the afternoon’s enjoyment concluding with afternoon tea. Party at Leeston. A surprise party arranged by Misses C. Cooke and F. Hickman visited the home of Mr and Mrs T. J. Fussell, Leeston, in honour of the approaching marriage of their daughter, Myrtle. An enjoyable time was spent, games and dancing occupying the evening. Music was supplied by Miss Ruby Greenwood and Messrs Basil Young and Angus Carr. Competitions were won by Miss M. Fussell and Mr S. Reid. Many gifts were received bv the bride-to-be. Among: those present were:—Mesdames Langdale, Hastie and Fussell, Misses Mona Cooke, Margaret Brizzle, Gladys Mitchell, Fairley and Betty Ormandy, Winnie Pilgrim, Doreen Savage, C. Cooke, F.
