Meeting of Unemployment Committee. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, December 18. It was decided at a meeting of the local unemployment committee to give the two-day men one day’s work, threeday men two days and four-day men three days, in the week ending December 26. It was reported that the total sum required to give all the men full time would be £752 15s 6d and the allocation was £507 19s. Four applications for men under the Np. 4A scheme were granted and it was agreed to grant seven applications from residents for unemployed labour. Under the Board’s schemes eight applications for work were received. Six were granted, one reclassified and one declined. Motor Cycling. At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club the president, Mr G. T. Clarke, presided. Correspondence was received from the South Canterbury Motor-Cycle Club asking for the date of the inter-club rally at Mr li. Brown’s property, Seaview. It was decided to hold the rally on January 24 if that date was suitable to the Pioneer Sports Club. The club captain forwarded his resignation, which was accepted with regret. The deputy captain, Mr T. IP. Farley, was appointed captain, and Mr R. P. Chibnall deputy captain. To the two vacancies on the committee Messrs C. Pickford and W. J. Preddy were appointed. The hill climb was set down for Sunday next, December 20, on Mr Greaves’s property at Cavendish. On the motion of Mr Chibnall,

seconded by Mr Farley, it was decided to write to the Ashburton County Council pointing out the dangerous nature of the surface of the approaches to the traffic bridge, particularly to a solo motor-cyclist. It was stated that the danger was not confined to motorcyclists, as if one got into trouble in the shingle he would be a source of danger to oncoming and overtaking traffic. School Prises. : At the Ashburton Borough School ■ the dux prizes were won by Betty Car--1 son and George Gudsell. At the Ashburton East School dux [ medals were won by May Cowen and ' Leslie Brown. Personal. ; Mr 11. J. Chapman, of the teaching ; staff of the Ashburton East School, ; was the recipient of a cigarette case, holder, and a box of cigarettes from . the pupils of Standard VI. at the : annual break-up to-day. The presen- > tation was made by Leslie Brown. On Wednesday evening Mr G. C. Nicoll, who is to be married shortly, . was met by members of the Manage- ” ment Committee of the Ashburton County Cricket Association and was . presented with a vase. The chairman > (Mr 11. B. Millichamp) made the pre- , sentation. He said he hoped that Mr . Nicoll would continue to take an in- ■ terest in cricket as a player, and also * as a member of the Management Committee. These remarks were endorsed by Messrs F. Prichard, R. H. Biggar, J. P. Hanratty, W. Crawford and S. M. Cassidy.
