WHEN OUR FINGER-JOINTS CRACK.
When one of our joints is strained slightly beyond the point of its natural play, the tendency is for it to snap, like the joint of a piece of furniture. Just, however, as an old and much-used door will often allow an extra swing, without breakage, but with a creak, so our finger-joints, which we use more than any others, will sometimes allow themselves to be pulled beyond their real limit of play. What happens is that th» “hinges” give a trifle, and the finger slips out a fraction irom its socket. The little jar of coming out and then slipping back again causes the familiar crack.
