MORE WATER ALLOWED.

Council Makes Concession to Ratepayers. As a form of additional relief to ratepayers, the minimum allowance of water passing through the City Council meters is to be increased to 25,000 gallons a year. This step was decided on at the meeting of the council last evening. The Waterworks Committee reported that on March 20, 1911, the council fixed the minimum allowance of water supplied through a meter at 20,000 gallons. Owing to a reduction in the general water rate this year, consumers receiving their supply through a meter would not be entitled to use the same quantity of water without extra charge, as they were entitled only to 1000 gallons for each complete shilling of general water rate paid. This applied particularly to ratepayers whose water rate was formerly just over £l. The committee recommended that with a view to providing additional relief, the minimum allowance be increased to 25,000 gallons. Councillor M. E. Lyons said that there was a call from the householders for a more liberal supply of water. Councillor J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Waterworks Committee, said that when the May’s Road pumping station was completed, there would be another 1,000,000 gallons of water available daily. If costs could be kept down to what they were now, the council could afford to be more liberal next year. The recommendation was adopted.
