FARMERS TO SUPPORT THE POUND SCHEME.
Recently Mr G. Harper, chairman of the Citizens’ Relief Committee, waited upon the North Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union and urged that farming organisations, through central representatives, should be asked to give support to the “ pound ” scheme. On that occasion Mr Harper emphasised the distress prevalent in the city. The question was brought before the Food Committee, which was set up some time ago, at a meeting held yesterday, over which Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane presided. After consideration it was resolved :—“ That this meeting of representatives of the Canterbury A. and P. Association and the Farmers’ Union advise members generally to give all support possible to the scheme, as distress exists in and around Christchurch. Gifts of produce will be accepted by the central organisation, and those who are in a position to make donations are urged to do so. As it would not be advisable for all districts to be sending forward goods at once, those willing to send produce forward are asked to communicate first with Mr A. E. G. Lyttle, secretary
of the a£\orth Canterbury Farmers' Union, prior to consigning their donations of produce.”
